It was around 4 p.m. on a Tuesday when Carol walked into Ed’s Barber
Shoppe with her grandson, Ian. She had been in town from Florida and
was babysitting this week while her daughter worked. She promised she
would take Ian for a haircut, and her daughter told her the best place
was Ed’s Barber Shoppe.
As she strolled in to the traditional barber shop, there were two barbers in the shop, but only one was working on a customer.
“Welcome to Ed’s Barber Shoppe. I’m Ed. Are you both here for a haircut?" said the barber working on the customer in the first chair.
“Actually, my grandson needs the haircut," Carol said.
“Well, Neal has a chair open for the young fella, and I’ll be done shortly if you change your mind," Ed smiled. “I have quite a few women who are regular customers, so I won’t butcher it!"
As Ian ran to sit in the barber’s chair, Carol took a seat and said, “Maybe next time."
As she sat leafing through a magazine, she kept her eye on Ed as he cut the man’s hair. She noticed he was using a lot of different electric clippers and seemed to know what he was doing. When she looked up again he was tidying up the hair with scissors and then let the man look in the mirror to check the cut.
“Looks good, Ed, like usual," the man said. Ed spun the man around and took out a brush and dusted him off around the shoulders and then took the cape off and shook it out. Carol figured he was finished but the man didn’t move and Ed slipped the white cape back over the man and then reached in a drawer and got a white towel to drape over the man’s shoulders. Next, he pulled a wet towel out of a steamer and dabbed it around the man’s neck and sideburns and held it there for a minute or two.
Then he put the towel in the sink and clicked a button on a dispenser and shaving cream came out. He spread the shaving cream around the man’s sideburns, ears and neck. He then picked up a razor off the counter and pulled a leather strap out from the side of the chair and started moving the razor back and forth across the strap. After a few minutes, he started to shave around the man’s ears and neck. Carol found herself staring and Ed looked up and smiled at her as he noticed she was watching.
She quickly went back to her magazine, feeling a little embarrassed. After Ed was done shaving the man, her used a blow dryer to dry him off and then took a small clipper that was hanging under the counter and used it to shave the man’s neck.
“All set, Bob," Ed said as he proceeded to take the cape off. Carol had been so intent on watching that she forgets about her grandson.
“Grandma, how does this look," Ian said. Carol walked over to the chair and said, “My, you look handsome. That’s perfect."
Ian jumped out of the chair and grabbed a sucker as Carol reached in her purse to pay.
“How much?" she said.
“Kids cuts are $8, men’s are $15 and ladies are $20," Ed said.
Carol paid Ed and tipped Neal and said, “Thanks gentlemen. You did a great job. I can see why my daughter brings him here."
“Well, tell all your friends. We can always use the business," Ed said.
“I’m from Florida and will be going back next week so I don’t exactly know anyone, but if I can think of anyone to recommend I will," Carol said.
“We are open until 7 during the week and 5 on Saturday, but we will take customers later if we need to," Ed said.
“Well, thanks again, “Carol said, and they walked out of the shop and got in the car to drive home.
“Thanks for taking me Grandma," Ian said. “Can we get some ice cream now?"
“We sure can, honey," Carol said.
“Grandma, where do you get your hair cut," Ian asked.
“Oh, I go to a place in Florida where I live," she said.
“Is it a place like Ed’s," he asked.
“You mean a barber shop?" she replied. “No, mine is a place that does women’s hair."
“Well I have seen some of the mom’s get their hair cut at Ed’s," Ian said. “Is that why he asked you if you wanted a haircut?"
“Maybe, honey. I just think he was being nice," she said.
As Carol drove to the ice cream store, she started thinking about Ed’s Barber Shoppe. She had never had her haircut in a barber shop, but it was obvious from watching Ed and from what her grandson said that he knew his stuff. Even though Carol was 60 years old, she kept her hair cut short and neat, and she looked good for her age.
She had seen a barber shop in a strip mall where she lived and noticed they had a sign that said Ladies Cuts, and had even seen a woman her age getting her haircut there one night, but hadn’t really thought about it until today.
She did need a haircut, and it was hot in Florida and she wanted to keep it short.
“Grandma, there it is," said Ian to startle her out of her thinking. “Great, let’s go gtet some ice cream!"
Two days later, Carol wanted to do a little shopping and asked her daughter if she could borrow the car.
“I just need to go into town and get a few things before I leave tomorrow," Carol said. “I love your downtown and there were a few shops I saw when I took Ian for a haircut that I would like to check out."
“Sure Mom, take your time. I don’t need the car tonight," said her daughter.
Once Carol got into the downtown area, she parked the car at a meter, put in some coins, and started to walk down the street. She saw the craft store she wanted to visit and went inside. As she was looking at something in the store, she looked out the window and realized she was right across the street from Ed’s Barber Shoppe. Because it was winter it was already dark outside, and she could see the lights on in the shop and both barbers still there. But there weren’t any customers. As she watched, the other barber, Neal, left the shop and she noticed Ed was sitting in his chair reading the paper.
She looked at her watch and noticed it was 6:45. She remembered he said he was open until 7, and she reached up and ran her fingers through her hair. She had actually thought about getting her hair cut at the barber shop, but would have been nervous if there were men in the shop at the same time. But at close to 7 on a Thursday night, she didn’t think anyone else was going to come in. She decided she would walk over and at least go in and ask Ed if he would still be willing to cut her hair at this late hour.
As she walked across the street she actually hoped he would say “No" but as she got to the curb Ed looked up from his paper and saw her coming. He jumped out of the chair and waved at her and smiled. She was caught now, so she decided to stick her head in the door and make it look like she was just saying hello.
“Hi, Ed, I was just shopping and saw you so I thought I would stop and say hello," Carol said as she walked into his shop.
“Well, I’m glad you did, but I was hoping you were coming to get a haircut," Ed replied.
“Well it is kind of late so I didn’t even think you would be open," she said.
“We don’t usually get too many customers this late, that’s why Neal left. But I will be happy to give you a cut if you like," he said. “Why don’t you take your coat off and grab a cup of coffee in the back room there and I just need to make a phone call. If you decide to get a haircut I will be happy to do it."
Carol was caught now, so she went through the back room door and saw the coffee pot, and grabbed a cup. As she stood there she noticed there was a room that had a barber chair in it and curtains to the entrance. It looked like it was a private room for cutting hair.
She wandered back and took a seat as watched Ed talk on the phone. He hung up and turned to her and said, "So ready for a haircut?"
Carol squirmed in her seat and said," Well, I do need a haircut before I head back to Florida, but I’ve never had it cut by a barber," she said.
“Well, I cut at least 4 or 5 ladies a week her, so I’m pretty good at it," he said. “And I’ll even give you a discount since you brought your grandson in this week. Plus, I’ll be locking up now so there won’t be any other customers coming in, so you won’t have to worry about getting a haircut with other people watching."
It was almost like he read her mind. “Alright, then, I’m ready," she said.
As she was hanging her coat on the hanger, she noticed Ed had put up the closed sign in the window and had pulled the blind down on the door and closed the curtains to the front window.
“There, now no one will think I am still open," he said.
Carol walked to his chair and started to sit down, but he said, “Ah, why don’t we go in the back where I have a private room for cutting women’s hair. I find the ladies are more comfortable away from the main area of the shop," he added.
So that’s what the room in the back was for, Carol thought. She followed him into the back room and he flicked on the lights in the cutting room and pointed her to sit in the chair, which was facing the mirror. As she sat down the phone rang and Ed said, “Excuse me a minute." He walked into the main part of the shop and Carol sat looking in the mirror at her hair. Then she looked around the counter and noticed that there were six different electric clippers hanging on hooks of the wall next to the chair, along with a variety of scissors on the counter. She also noticed there were two razors similar to the one Ed had used on his male customer when she was in the shop with her grandson. Before she could give it much thought, she saw Ed coming through the doorway to the back room and noticed he closed the curtains on the entrance to the back room and then walked into the private room and slid his hands through her hair.
“So, I assume you want it trimmed up, keeping it shorter on the sides and back and a little longer on the top," Ed said. Obviously, he had cut women’s hair before, because that was exactly what she told her stylist back in Florida.
“That sounds about right," she said.
“Just to be sure, I have a few photos I want to show you of some female clients," he said. “I think you are talking about something like this?"
Carol looked at the picture and said, “That’s perfect." In fact, it was much nicer than the haircut she got at home, and her anxiety started to fade.
Ed grabbed a white-striped cape off a hanger and draped it around her shoulders, and then took a neck tissue out of a holder and wrapped it around her neck. He then tightened the cape and grabbed a comb out of the comb holder. As he started to comb through it he said," It looks like you washed your hair today so if you like I can cut it without re-washing it."
“Yes I did and that will be fine," she said. She realized he was very thorough and now she knew why the haircut example she had seen was so good. This guy knew his stuff.
He then pumped up the chair a little higher and turned around and closed the curtains on the door to the private cutting room. He then turned her chair sideways, and she heard rustling behind her. Then she heard a loud “click" and Ed’s hand gently pushed her head forward. The comb was next, combing the back of her hair, and then he lifted the hair at the bottom of her neck with the combing and she heard a motorized noise and saw hair fall on her cape. It was obvious he was using the electric clippers!
She glanced sideways at the mirror and saw that one of the clippers was indeed off the hook and in his hands. At first she was nervous, because the only time she had had clippers used on her was when her stylist cleaned up her neck line. But as she watched him work, she thought back to how well he handled the clippers on his male customer. Watching him work now, she realized that was why the haircut she saw of his female client looked so good. It was clean, sharp lines and tapered perfectly. If he was going to give her that kind of haircut, she would be thrilled.
He continued to work on the back of her hair, and she said," I noticed you have a lot of those electric razors hanging on the wall. Do you use them all?"
“They are called clippers and yes, they all get used, even when I cut women’s hair," he said. I will probably use three or four on you tonight."
With that, the buzzing stopped and she heard more rustling behind her and another “click", only this time the buzzing was very quiet. He continued to work on her hair in back and then moved around to the side and clipped the hair above and around her ears. He did this on both sides and then turned the clippers off and hung them on the wall. Next he grabbed a spray bottle and wet her hair down and started to use scissors to trim the top.
He then wet down the hair again and grabbed a styling razor off the counter. He pumped up the chair a little more and gently tilted her head back and used the razor on the top of her hair. Pieces of hair fell past her face and on the floor as he worked the razor through the hair. He then tilted her head forward and used the razor around the back and sides of her head in the same manor.
He then took a comb and combed the hair back, and said, “It’s starting to take shape."
Then he took a blow dryer and comb and dried her hair. He turned her chair to face the door and loosened the cape, took the tissue of her neck and grabbed a small clipper off the wall.
“Just going to clean you up around your neck and ears," Ed said. He pushed Carol’s neck down and switched the clippers on and started to clean up her neck. Carol found herself thinking that she had had the clippers used in her salon before to clean up her neck, but the way he worked the clippers was different than the beautician she was used to. He then walked around to each side and edged around her ears and sideburn. He clicked off the clippers and stood and looked at her and said, “Now that looks better!" He turned Carol to face the mirror and dusted her off with a brush, and then held a hand mirror behind her to let her look.
“Yes, that looks very good!" Carol said.
Ed put the mirror on the counter and turned the chair around to face the door. He took the hand vacuum and sucked up all the hair on Carol’s neck and sideburns. Then he took off the cape and shook it out. Carol started to get out of the chair, thinking he was finished, when Ed put his hand on her shoulder and said, “Oh, I’m not quite done yet, just shaking out the cape."
Carol slowly sat back in the chair and Ed through the cape loosely around her shoulders. Next, he pulled a white towel from the cabinet and placed it on her shoulders. Carol assumed he was going to style her hair, but the next thing she felt was a hot towel around her ears and neck. Ed held it there for a second and then took it off. She heard a whirring noise and realized it was the shaving cream dispenser she saw Ed using on the male customer when she was in the shop before. Ed quickly spread the shaving cream around her ears and neckline, and then she felt the chair move a little and looked down to see Ed stropping the razor on a brown leather strap.
“I figured since you were getting a cut at a barbershop I would give you the full treatment," Ed said. Carol knew what that meant—he was going to shave her.
She wanted to say something but couldn’t, and quickly Ed was shaving around her ear and neck with the straight razor.
After he was finished, he used the wet towel again to clean her up around the ears, and used the blow dryer to dry it off and style her hair.
He turned her around to the mirror again and took off the cape.
“Now we are done," he said. She looked in the mirror and to her surprise, the defined line around her ears looked great.
“Have you ever been shaved before?" he asked.
“No I haven’t, and it was an experience," she said.
“Well, I shave all my lady customers who get short haircuts," he said. “It keeps the fuzzies from growing back."
As Carol got up to walk into the main part of the salon, she said “How much is the haircut?"
“Well, this one is on me, as long as you come back next time you are in town for another haircut," he said.
As Carol rubbed her hand over the back of her shaved neck, she smiled at Ed and said, “Oh, I will. I definitely will."
